Few movers can shift a piano properly. The difference shows up later in scratched casework, a cracked soundboard, or a tuning that’s gone completely off. By the time you find out, the cheap mover is long gone and you’re left with a repair bill that’s bigger than the move itself.
We move pianos as a specialist job, not a side hustle. We’ve shifted everything from second hand uprights to high value concert grands across Christchurch suburbs and the wider South Island. The piano gets wrapped, lifted properly, and placed exactly where you want it. If you want a free quote and a chat about your piano, get in touch with our team.
Here’s what actually goes into a proper piano move.
Why pianos need a specialist mover
You can’t just chuck a piano on a trolley and shove it through a doorway. A general mover will get your piano from A to B. A specialist mover will get it there without damaging it. Our piano moving service is set up for the specialist side of things with different equipment and different insurance cover.
The 4 main piano types and what each one needs
The move depends entirely on what you’ve got at home.

Upright pianos are the most common at 200 to 300 kg. They’re tall with vertical strings, easier to wheel but tippy if you don’t know what you’re doing. Console and spinet pianos are smaller uprights at 150 to 200 kg, easier to move but still need care. Baby grands sit at 250 to 350 kg with detachable legs and a pedal lyre that comes off for moving. Concert grands at 350 to 500 kg need four or five movers, a proper piano dolly, and a truck with a tail lift.
The time and cost difference between an upright move and a concert grand move can easily be three or four times the price.
What proper piano movers actually do
A proper piano move starts well before the truck arrives. We measure the piano’s dimensions exactly and check every doorway, hallway, stairway, and turn between the current spot and the truck. We identify the lowest clearance point in the path, count any stairs, and confirm the destination room is actually ready to receive it.
The packing involves soft pads wrapped around the whole piano, plastic shrink wrap to hold them in place, corner protectors on the harder edges, and pedals removed if they’re vulnerable. The lift uses a piano dolly under the body not the legs, three or four movers minimum, and slow communicated movements. We tilt only if absolutely necessary because most pianos travel upright.
In the truck the piano gets strapped securely against the wall with padding between it and any other cargo. We drive carefully and avoid rough roads where we can, which matters more in some Christchurch areas like Aranui and parts of New Brighton where the roads are bumpier. The unload is just the reverse of the load.

What it costs to move a piano in Christchurch
Honest answer, it depends. Here are the rough ranges for moves within Christchurch.
- Upright piano (same suburb, ground floor to ground floor): $250-450
- Upright piano (with stairs or tricky access): $400-700
- Baby grand piano: $500-900
- Concert grand piano: $800-1500+
- Piano moves to outlying areas (Rangiora, Rolleston, Akaroa): Add $100-300
What pushes cost up is stairs (each flight adds time and crew), narrow doorways or sharp turns, apartment buildings without lifts, older Christchurch homes with tight hallways, detachable parts on grands, and a long distance from the piano to the truck. What keeps cost down is ground floor to ground floor moves, standard doorway widths, clear access on both ends, and booking outside peak hours.
We give a written quote upfront so you know exactly what you’re paying before anyone touches your piano.
Why DIY piano moves go wrong
Look, for a small upright on flat ground over a short distance, you might manage with four strong mates, a hired piano dolly, and a lot of care. For anything else, don’t do it.
The common things that go wrong with DIY piano moves include backs and knees because pianos sit heavy on the lower lumbar, dropped pianos because concrete is unforgiving, bent pedals when tipped wrong, scratched casework when wrapping is rushed, broken doorways and gouged floors, and internal damage that doesn’t show until you actually play it. The cost of saving $400 on a move can easily turn into $2,000 of damage. We’ve fixed enough DIY mishaps to know how it usually ends.
Tuning after the move
Almost every piano needs tuning after a move. It’s not the move that knocks it out, it’s the new environment with different room, different humidity, and different temperature.
Wait at least two weeks before tuning after a move so the piano can settle into the new room’s climate. Then have a piano tuner come once, and again three to six months later. Christchurch has a damp South Island climate that affects pianos, so a dehumidifier near the piano helps keep things stable. A good Christchurch piano tuner typically costs $150 to $250 and it’s worth every cent if you actually play.
When pianos need storage
Sometimes the move isn’t simple. The new place isn’t ready, the renovation isn’t done, the destination isn’t decided yet. Our storage solutions in Christchurch handle pianos properly with climate controlled, secure, off the ground storage.
Don’t park a piano in a regular self storage unit that gets damp in winter. It’ll cost you more in repairs than the storage saves you.
Picking a piano mover in Christchurch
Three questions worth asking before you book any piano mover.
Ask how many pianos they’ve moved this year because specialist piano movers handle dozens while general movers might handle two or three. Ask if they carry insurance that covers pianos specifically because many policies cap damage at depreciated value, which is almost nothing on an older piano. And ask them to describe the lifting technique because a good mover will tell you about dollies, padding, tilt versus upright transport, and team coordination, while a vague answer is a red flag.
We’ve moved everything from cheap uprights to expensive concert grands across Christchurch suburbs. Same care every time. You can see what previous customers say in our reviews.

Testimonials
Feedback from our customers

They are so fast to reply and very good with timing. They moved all my normal house furnitures but also very big plants and wood panels etc. From Richmond to the country side.
They are super polite and efficient.
Highly recommend them

They have a high quality of:
- genuine quality work ethic (very difficult to find in NZ),
- punctuality,
- responsive communication in scheduling, billing,
- seriously amazing driving skills backing into a tight city townhome driveway
- and professionalism in getting the job done with care and quality.
There were no scratches, carpets were clean, no dings in the walls despite the house being of a mini doll house size. All of our items we moved were also in good condition / undamaged.
Jas is definitely wired to get things done properly. It will take him a long way in life. Thank you Jas and Manee. It was a pleasure working with the both of you.

Thanks Jas
We had a niggly move, from a 3 bedroom place in Ashburton, into a two bedroom apartment in central Christchurch with some tricky access and stair work (sorry crew) but they knocked it out in good time, at a good price, and with good care - 10/10 will be using them again next time we move.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to move a piano in Christchurch?
For a typical upright piano moving within Christchurch on a ground floor, expect $250 to $450. Baby grand moves usually run $500 to $900. Concert grands and moves with stairs cost more. We provide a written quote upfront after looking at the piano and the access.
How long does a piano move take?
A simple upright move within Christchurch usually takes one to two hours including drive time. Grand pianos take two to four hours. Add time for stairs, narrow access, or longer distances to outlying suburbs like Rangiora or Akaroa.
Will my piano stay in tune after the move?
Probably not perfectly. Pianos drift out of tune from the change in environment, not from the move itself. Wait two weeks for it to settle then book a piano tuner. Christchurch humidity can affect tuning more than other parts of NZ.
Can you move a piano upstairs or down?
Yes, but it costs more. Stairs need extra crew, slower movement, and sometimes specialist equipment. Tell us about stairs when you book so we send the right crew.
Do you cover damage if something goes wrong?
We carry insurance specific to piano coverage, not just general furniture cover. Ask us about it when we quote and we’ll explain exactly what’s covered.
Can I move my piano myself?
For a small upright on flat ground over a short distance, with four strong mates and a proper dolly, maybe. For anything bigger, with stairs, or with any access challenges, no. The cost of damage usually outweighs the cost of professional movers.
Do you move pianos between cities or islands?
Yes. Our inter island and intercity moving service handles longer piano moves with the same care as local ones. We pack the piano the same way and secure it for the longer drive.
