Moving quotes are hard to figure out. One mover says $600, another says $400, a third says $1,200 for the same job. Half the time the cheapest quote doubles on the day with surprise fees you weren’t told about. By the time the truck is loaded, you can’t really say no.
We’ve been quoting Christchurch moves since 2017 and we put everything in writing upfront so what you see is what you pay. No mystery hourly fees, no surprise stair charges, no “we’ll work it out later” on the day.
Here’s how moving costs actually work in Christchurch so you can spot a fair quote when you see one.
What actually drives the cost of a move
Three things drive most of the cost. Volume of stuff, distance, and complexity. A studio apartment moves in two to three hours, a four bedroom family home takes a full day with three or four movers. Within Christchurch is cheapest, Christchurch to Rolleston or Rangiora adds an hour each way, and Christchurch to Auckland is a completely different story.
The complexity is what catches most people out. Stairs, lifts, narrow doorways create awkward access. A simple $400 move can easily turn into a $1,200 move if a few of these stack up.

These are indicative ranges based on local market norms. Your actual quote will vary depending on your specific situation.

The hidden costs nobody tells you about
The quote isn’t always the full bill if you’re not careful. The common add-ons are heavy item surcharges for pianos, safes, spa pools, and gym equipment.

Packing materials like boxes, tape, bubble wrap and mattress covers are sometimes included and sometimes charged extra. Insurance upgrades to replacement value cost more than basic depreciated cover but actually protect you properly. Storage fees add up daily if your new place isn’t ready, and weekend or holiday surcharges of 15 to 25% are standard with most movers. Always ask the mover to list any of these on the quote so they can’t be added later.
How to get an accurate quote

Why the cheapest quote is usually the wrong one
A quote that’s 30% below the market is almost never genuine. The cheap mover is doing one of four things. They plan to add fees on the day when you can’t refuse because the truck is already loaded.
We’ve quoted moves where a competitor came in $400 cheaper, the customer accepted it, and called us in tears on moving day. By then it’s usually too late. If a quote feels too good to be true, it is.
Honest ways to save money on a move
There are legitimate ways to bring the cost down without taking on risk.
Move off peak when you can. Mid month is cheaper than end of month, Tuesday or Wednesday is cheaper than weekend, and avoid public holidays. Pack the non fragile stuff yourself if you’re fit and have time, and let the movers handle the kitchen and delicate items. Our packing service is worth it for fragile gear but not strictly needed for clothes and books.
Declutter before you book because every box you don’t move saves time. Book early because last minute moves cost more when crews are tight. Bundle packing, moving, and storage with one mover because most offer a better rate for the package. And ask the mover for their quieter days if your dates are flexible because many will discount to fill empty slots.
WINZ covered moves
If you’re on a benefit or NZ Super and the move is necessary for medical, safety, or affordability reasons, WINZ may cover all or part of the cost. The situations they commonly approve include moves out of unsafe housing, downsizing to a more affordable home, or shifting to be near medical care.

We provide WINZ formatted quotes for free with all the right paperwork and itemisation Work and Income needs. The approval is up to them, not us, but the quote side is straightforward when it’s done properly.
Insurance: what you actually need
Most movers offer basic insurance bundled with the move. Read it carefully because it usually has limits that catch people out.
Standard insurance often only covers depreciated value not replacement value, excludes items you packed yourself, caps payouts at low per item limits, and requires written proof of pre move condition for high value items. If you have items worth more than $2,000 to $3,000 each like electronics, art, jewellery, antiques, or instruments, ask about top up insurance. Or check your home contents insurance because some policies cover items in transit.
Christchurch specific factors
A few things specific to moves in Christchurch worth knowing about.
Earthquake rebuilt homes built or rebuilt post 2011 sometimes have narrower access, smaller doorways, or tighter driveways than the old standard, which can slow a move down. Hill suburbs like Cashmere, Mt Pleasant, and Lyttelton have access that’s tricky for big trucks, so sometimes a smaller truck and two trips works better than one big truck and a long carry. Central city parking often means dealing with restrictions, time limits, or zoned resident parking. And Christchurch winter from June to August is wet enough that weather protection on furniture matters.
For longer hauls our inter island and intercity moving service covers anywhere in NZ from Christchurch with the same standards as a local move. You can also see our full Christchurch services here.

Testimonials
Feedback from our customers

They are so fast to reply and very good with timing. They moved all my normal house furnitures but also very big plants and wood panels etc. From Richmond to the country side.
They are super polite and efficient.
Highly recommend them

They have a high quality of:
- genuine quality work ethic (very difficult to find in NZ),
- punctuality,
- responsive communication in scheduling, billing,
- seriously amazing driving skills backing into a tight city townhome driveway
- and professionalism in getting the job done with care and quality.
There were no scratches, carpets were clean, no dings in the walls despite the house being of a mini doll house size. All of our items we moved were also in good condition / undamaged.
Jas is definitely wired to get things done properly. It will take him a long way in life. Thank you Jas and Manee. It was a pleasure working with the both of you.

Thanks Jas
We had a niggly move, from a 3 bedroom place in Ashburton, into a two bedroom apartment in central Christchurch with some tricky access and stair work (sorry crew) but they knocked it out in good time, at a good price, and with good care - 10/10 will be using them again next time we move.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to move within Christchurch?
For a typical 3-bed home move within Christchurch, expect $600 to $1,000. Smaller homes cost less, larger homes cost more, and stairs or tricky access push the price up.
Is it cheaper to move yourself?
Sometimes, but rarely as much as people think. By the time you hire a truck, buy packing materials, take time off work, and pay for fuel, the savings shrink. And if you damage anything, the maths flips. For small moves it can work. For full home moves, professional movers usually come out ahead.
Do you charge by the hour or by the job?
We quote by the job. You see one written number upfront, with itemised costs for any add ons like packing, stairs, or heavy items. No surprise hourly bills at the end.
Are weekends more expensive?
Usually 15 to 25% more, yes. If your dates are flexible, mid week is cheaper. End of month is the most expensive time, with summer holidays close behind.
Do you offer free quotes?
Yes. We come to your home, walk through everything including garage and shed, and give you a written quote with no obligation. The quote is what you pay, no end of day surprises.
Can WINZ pay for my move?
If you’re on a benefit or NZ Super and the move is necessary, often yes. We provide WINZ ready quotes for free that you can submit to Work and Income.
How far in advance should I book?
Two to four weeks for normal moves. Six to eight weeks for end of month, summer, or public holiday dates. Last minute bookings are possible but rates are higher and crew options narrower.
