There’s more stuff to sort through, the body’s not what it used to be, and the home you’re leaving probably has 40 years of memories built into the walls. Most movers don’t get that.
We do it differently. We’ve shifted over 1,100 homes across Christchurch and the South Island, and a good chunk of those have been senior moves. We move at your pace and we handle the whole thing from packing to unpacking so you can sit back with a cup of tea. If you want a free no-obligation quote, give us a call or fill in the form.
Here’s what you actually need to know before you book any mover.
Why senior moves need a different kind of mover
Most moving companies treat every job the same way. Quick walkthrough, load the truck, drive, unload, hand you the bill. That works fine for a young couple moving into their first flat. It doesn’t work when you’re shifting later in life and there’s decades of stuff to deal with.
The thing is, a senior move has so much more going on under the surface. You might be letting go of the family home for the first time in forty years. You’re probably downsizing into a place that’s half the size, which means hard choices about what to keep. Then there’s the health side, the family opinions or the WINZ paperwork. It all stacks up.
A mover that rushes you through that makes it worse. Our senior moving service is built around moving at your pace. We’ll wait while you finish a thought, or change your mind about where the couch goes.
Sort out the basics before you pack anything
Before you wrap a single thing, get clear on three basics.

The first one is where you’re going. A Christchurch retirement village, a smaller home, in with family, or assisted living. The second one is when you can actually move in. Is it a hard date or flexible. The third one is who’s helping you. Family, mates, professional movers, or some mix of all three.
These three answers shape everything else. A move into a retirement village in Riccarton looks pretty different from moving in with the kids out in Rangiora. Sort these out first and the rest of the planning gets a lot easier.
For a full step by step plan, our 8 week NZ moving checklist goes into more detail.
Clearing out the easy way
This bit is the hardest part of a senior move. Not the heavy lifting. The choices.
Some rules that actually help when you’re staring at a lifetime of stuff.
- The 12 month rule. If you haven’t used it in 12 months, it’s probably not coming with you.
- One per category. One tea set, one winter coat, one set of garden tools. Not three of each.
- Digitise the memories. Photo albums take up a full shelf. A USB stick takes up nothing and your grandkids can scan it for you.
- Gift before you sell. Family heirlooms feel better in a grandchild’s hands than at a garage sale.
- Keep the small comforts. A favourite mug, a familiar blanket, the framed wedding photo. These make a new place feel like home faster than any piece of furniture ever will.
Honestly, the truth most guides won’t tell you is this. You’ll get rid of stuff and regret some of it later, and you’ll also keep stuff you never use again. Both of those are completely normal.
Smaller spaces need smarter planning
Most retirement village units in Christchurch run between 60 and 110 square metres, roughly half the size of a typical three bedroom home, so you can’t just pack the lot and figure it out at the other end. Get the floor plan from your new place, mark roughly where each large item is going to go, measure your doorways, lift dimensions and corridor widths, and spot anything that won’t fit well before moving day.
If something special doesn’t quite fit but you’re not ready to part with it, our storage solutions give you time to decide without rushing. Short term, long term, all secure. You don’t have to make the call on moving day with the truck idling outside.
Picking the right Christchurch mover
Not every moving company is set up for senior moves. The ones that are will do all of these things without being asked.
- Work at your pace, not theirs
- Wrap fragile and sentimental items properly, not just chuck them in a box
- Confirm details by phone, not just by email or text
- Have insurance that covers replacement value, not just depreciation
- Give you a clear written quote with no surprises on the day
We’ve shifted seniors across Christchurch suburbs from Fendalton to Halswell, Sumner to Belfast, more times than we can count. Have a read of our customer reviews to see what that looks like in real life. And if you’re shifting from Christchurch to another city or even another island, our inter island and intercity moving service handles the long hauls with the same care.
What moving day actually looks like
The crew turns up around 8 in the morning, does a walkthrough with you, finishes any last minute packing, and starts loading the heaviest furniture first. There’s a proper lunch break around 12:30, the truck heads off after, and unloading starts mid afternoon. By half four we’re doing the final walkthrough with you, you sign off if everything’s in order, and the kettle goes on.
No rushing, no surprises, no “we’ll figure it out when we get there”. If something does go wrong, we tell you straight away. If anything costs more than the quote, we explain it before doing it, not after.
Settling in over the first two weeks
The move ends when the truck leaves. Settling in takes a bit longer than that. Some things that help.

Unpack the bedroom first because sleep matters more than tidy shelves. Get your morning routine going early, with the same mug, the same chair, the same view if you can manage it. Don’t try to decorate everything in week one because you’ll change your mind once you’ve actually lived in the rooms a few days. Meet one neighbour in the first week because that’s enough to start feeling at home. And make sure you tell your GP and pharmacy your new address because health continuity matters more than ever after a shift.
WINZ help for senior moves
If you’re on NZ Super or a benefit and the move is essential, WINZ may cover part or all of the cost. The situations they commonly approve include stairs becoming unmanageable, current housing being unsafe, or needing to downsize for affordability. To apply, you’ll need a written quote in the format Work and Income uses, along with supporting documents like a GP letter or tenancy paperwork depending on your situation.
We handle the quote side for free, send it through in the right layout, and can talk you through what WINZ will likely want to see. The final approval sits with WINZ, not us, but having the paperwork done properly makes a real difference to how quickly it gets processed. Just get in touch and ask for a WINZ quote.
Ready to shift
If you want a hand with your move, get in touch with our team for a free quote with no obligation. We’ve been shifting seniors around Christchurch since 2017 and we always work at your pace.
Testimonials
Feedback from our customers

They are so fast to reply and very good with timing. They moved all my normal house furnitures but also very big plants and wood panels etc. From Richmond to the country side.
They are super polite and efficient.
Highly recommend them

They have a high quality of:
- genuine quality work ethic (very difficult to find in NZ),
- punctuality,
- responsive communication in scheduling, billing,
- seriously amazing driving skills backing into a tight city townhome driveway
- and professionalism in getting the job done with care and quality.
There were no scratches, carpets were clean, no dings in the walls despite the house being of a mini doll house size. All of our items we moved were also in good condition / undamaged.
Jas is definitely wired to get things done properly. It will take him a long way in life. Thank you Jas and Manee. It was a pleasure working with the both of you.

Thanks Jas
We had a niggly move, from a 3 bedroom place in Ashburton, into a two bedroom apartment in central Christchurch with some tricky access and stair work (sorry crew) but they knocked it out in good time, at a good price, and with good care - 10/10 will be using them again next time we move.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a senior move cost in Christchurch?
It depends on three things. The size of your current home, the distance to the new place, and whether you want packing help. A typical move within Christchurch sits between $400 and $1,200. Bigger homes or shifts out to Rangiora, Rolleston, or Akaroa cost more. We give you a written quote upfront so there are no surprises on the day.
Will WINZ pay for my move?
If you’re on NZ Super or a benefit and the move is genuinely necessary, Work and Income often will cover part or all of the cost. We provide free WINZ formatted quotes you can submit. The decision sits with them, not us, but the paperwork side is straightforward when the quote is done right.
How far ahead should I book a senior move?
Two to four weeks ahead for most jobs. Six to eight weeks if you’re shifting around end of month, public holidays, or summer. The earlier the better honestly. Senior moves often need more crew time and a slower pace, so booking early means we can plan it properly instead of squeezing it in.
Do you help with packing too?
Yes, most senior customers ask for full or partial packing help. We bring the boxes, paper, bubble wrap, and tape. We pack as carefully as you’d pack your own grandmother’s china and we label everything so unpacking at the other end is straightforward.
What if I’m moving to a retirement village outside Christchurch?
We do those often. Christchurch to Timaru, Nelson, Queenstown, or even up to the North Island. Our inter island and intercity moving service handles the longer shifts with the same care as a local one. Same crew, same pace, just a longer drive.
Are your movers used to senior customers?
Yes. Our crew is trained to work slowly, talk clearly, and ask before they touch anything. We don’t rush, we don’t talk over you, and we don’t move furniture into a room until you’ve told us exactly where you want it. If anything feels off on the day, you tell us, and we sort it on the spot.
